Large, misshapen, or uneven labia can cause a loss of confidence and self-esteem. Women uncomfortable with their anatomy may become embarrassed and ashamed, shying away from intimate situations. More than that, bulky labia can cause discomfort and pain under certain clothing, with exercise, and during intercourse.
Disproportionate labia can cause:
- Pinching or pain during sexual intercourse
- Discomfort under tight clothing or pants
- An unsightly ‘bulge’ in swimwear
- Embarrassment and loss of confidence
- An avoidance of intimate situations
Changes in the shape of the labia majora or labia minora can be the result of childbirth, illness, and genetics, as well as the normal aging process. Some women develop poorly shaped labia during their youth, while for others the changes will occur over time. Fortunately, patients are able to correct this through Labiaplasty, a safe way to shape and sculpt the labia.
Labiaplasty (labia reduction and shaping) is becoming more popular as more women are realizing there is a solution to their concerns in this area. In many cases the procedure is more than cosmetic, it truly improves a woman’s quality of life.
Labiaplasty permits the reduction of large labia (labia minora and labia majora) to reduce their outward appearance and correct misshapenness or irregularities. The edges of the labia minora to be removed are marked in a symmetric fashion on both labia. The incisions are placed on the medial (inside) surfaces of the labia. The excessive skin and tissue is removed and the remaining edge is oversewn with a running suture. All sutures used are absorbable.
Post-operatively, patients are given antibiotics and told to apply a significant amount of lubricant to the surgical site for 3-4 weeks. They are instructed to refrain from sexual intercourse for 3-4 weeks.
Patients are usually extremely happy with their Labiaplasty results. They are pleasantly surprised how little pain they feel after the procedure. Women who felt embarrassed to wear bathing suits, leggings, or yoga tights are finally able to. They feel much more confident and overall feel that the surgery changes their life for the better.
